Dearest Dutch Friends,

Hello and I hope this note finds you exceptionally well!

For anyone interested in expanding your company in the United States, please allow me be the first American to welcome you! As an immigrant myself, I am confidently aware that the United States is truly a country with unlimited opportunities. I consider myself a living example of the aspirational American Dream. It is the country I so deeply love and I am profoundly honored to serve, and also represent, in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Every day, we at the U.S. Mission to the Netherlands and our counterparts at the Dutch Embassy and Consulates in the United States, are dedicated to further strengthening our bilateral trade relations. For over 400 years, the United States and the Netherlands have a long-standing relationship in history and culture. We are extremely grateful for this bilateral relationship, and we look forward to our continued journey together.

The United States is committed to increasing and elevating our economies, on both sides of the Atlantic. We are a diverse, hardworking nation of over 330 million people, generating a staggering GDP of $25 trillion U.S. dollars. I am thrilled that so many Dutch companies are interested in expanding and investing within the United States. I am particularly elated about the initiative for this guide, as it will elaborate upon the first steps for companies to successfully land and expand in the United States.

Trade relations are essential to fostering positive economic prosperity, stability and security. Our Commercial Team at the U.S. Embassy in The Hague is available to assist Dutch companies to expand their business(es) in the United States. For example, every year the Embassy leads a trade delegation to the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington D.C. in order to facilitate connections between U.S. state and federal government offices with Dutch businesses. Beste ondernemer,

Een warme groet uit Washington, D.C.!

Het feit dat u dit leest betekent mogelijk het begin van iets uitdagends: zakendoen in de Verenigde Staten. De Verenigde Staten staan bovenaan het lijstje voor internationale expansie van veel Nederlandse ondernemers. Het land kent een enorme marktomvang en is het thuis van toonaangevende innovatiehubs. De ondernemerschapsgeest en innovatiedrang die door het land waaien, gecombineerd met een cultuur die risico’s en nieuwe ideeën waardeert, creëert vele kansen voor ondernemers. Het maakt mij trots om te zien dat zoveel Nederlandse ondernemers hun activiteiten naar de Verenigde Staten hebben uitgebreid.

Nederland en de Verenigde Staten hebben al vierhonderd jaar een sterke band, gebaseerd op onze gedeelde geschiedenis en waarden. Deze band blijft alsmaar groeien en is onder andere zichtbaar in de handelscijfers:

  • Meer dan 2000 Nederlandse bedrijven zijn actief op de Amerikaanse markt
  • Nederland is de derde grootste investeerder in de Verenigde Staten wereldwijd met $617.1 miljard
  • Nederland is in 2023, alsook in 2022, de handelspartner waarmee de Verenigde Staten het hoogste handelsoverschot heeft ($56.8 miljard)
  • Wij creëren door de sterke economische relatie meer dan 1.07 miljoen Amerikaanse banen

Ondanks een uitnodigend klimaat voor ondernemers is het een uitdaging om de Amerikaanse markt in haar geheel te betreden. Dit komt door de verscheidenheid in cultuur, wet- en regelgeving per staat, regio of stad. Om die reden adviseren wij dan ook om allereerst te focussen op een specifieke regio die aansluit op uw product of service en waar vervolgens de voor u relevante informatie en netwerk aanwezig zijn. Onze collega’s binnen het economisch cluster op de ambassade in Washington, D.C., op de consulaten in Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, New York en San Francisco, en op onze kantoren in Houston, Los Angeles, Phoenix (binnenkort) en Boston, bestrijken de Amerikaanse markt in al haar regio’s en facetten. Zij kunnen u helpen om voet aan de grond te krijgen. Twijfel dan ook niet om contact met hen op te nemen wanneer u vragen heeft.

Ik wens u veel succes en een can-do mentaliteit toe bij het grijpen van kansen in het land van onbegrensde mogelijkheden.
